Bound by magical law, Kit takes up his master’s quest to rescue a rebellious fairy princess from an arranged marriage to King George III of England. The Accidental Highwayman: Being the Tale of Kit Bristol, His Horse Midnight, a Mysterious Princess, and Sundry Magical Persons Besides Book Reviews
All employers have flaws and secrets, but even though young Kit Bristol, who has recently become the sole manservant in a wealthy home, is well aware of the unsavory rumors swirling about his master, he's stunned to discover that the man is actually the infamous "Whistling Jack," a dastardly highwayman who goes around creating mayhem and is currently being pursued by Captain Sterne, who intends to see Jack hang if it's the last thing he does. Kit, an orphan whose last job was an acrobat in a traveling circus, was acquired by his new master through a gambling game, but infinitely prefers his new position. When circumstances catch up to Whistling Jack, it's up to Kit, now garbed in his attire and riding his magnificent horse, Midnight, to set off in pursuit of adventure. Soon he becomes entangled in a pledge to save a lady in distress, who is revealed to be the half-human daughter of a fairy king. Morgana is fleeing herself - as her father is forcing her to marry the royal King of England, George the Third. The two fall in with a motley crew of companions, including Willum and Gruntle, two small fairies; Lily, a tightrope walker who is unlucky in love; her senile uncle Cornelius; and Fred, a helpful baboon. Using the guise of a traveling circus, the group will attempt to reach safety - but they will have to deal with goblins, gryphons and other magic foes, as well as the ever vigilant Captain Sterne.
The story has many clever twists and takes on the traditional fantasy adventure. A magic map, a witch's tooth, an enchanted mirror and a mail system using bees all feature in the plot. There's also a dollop of romance - as Kit and Morgana grow closer throughout their adventures without realizing it. The end is not your traditional "and they lived happily ever after" one, leaving room for a sequel, of which I wouldn't mind reading if it's half as good as this one.
